Google’s new ad, airing during the 2024 Paris Olympics Opening Ceremony, showcases how the 2020 Tokyo Olympic champion inspires the next generation of female athletes.

As the Paris 2024 Olympics kick off today, Google is debuting its inspiring new campaign, ‘Dear Sydney,’ during NBC’s Opening Ceremony.

Although the global spotlight is on Sydney McLaughlin, the 24-year-old track star who set a world record in the 400-meter hurdles in 2021, Google’s ad focuses on a young girl whose dreams are ignited by McLaughlin’s achievements.

‘Dear Sydney’ tells the heartfelt story of a young girl who looks up to McLaughlin as her role model. The narrative, shared through her father’s perspective, reveals how he uses Google’s AI model, Gemini, to help his daughter write a letter to her hero.

The ad closes on a humorous note, with the girl admitting her dream of surpassing McLaughlin’s record, while Eve’s 2001 anthem, ‘Who’s That Girl?’ plays in the background.

As Team USA’s Official Search AI Partner, Google highlights how its innovative tools – such as Search’s AI Overviews and Gemini – can fuel aspirations and support young dreamers.

In addition to ‘Dear Sydney,’ viewers will also see Google’s refreshed ‘Welcome to the Gemini Era’ campaign, featuring other Team USA athletes including Kelsey Plum and Victor Montalvo.

The ad was ideated and produced in-house.
